Underwater Plastic Pollution

In my VR project, I created an underwater universe that is infested with plastic pollution. The concept of my project is to show how deep-sea creatures are suffering because of human behaviors, and provide information about how their actions towards the ocean affect sea creatures.

The user enters the underwater universe and is greeted by a welcome audio message explaining what to do next. The user walks around and reads the information provided as well as seeing how the fish are surrounded by plastic.

Planning…

As I started to brainstorm my ideas, I began with the storyboard template. I noted what I wanted the user to see and listen to, on the templates.

Experimentation…

After planning, I moved on to building the universe. I began by adding 3D assets of fish creatures and plastic bottles. I also animated the assets to move to make them more realistic. Then I included underwater audio in the scene, for it to all come together.

User-tests…

After conducting my user tests, I have made several changes to my scene.

As you can see on the image on the top the fish are barely swimming by the flowing plastic and they are not really struggling.

So I had animated several plastic bottles and placed them in front of a fish to make it seem realistic that the creature is feeding on the plastic bottle.

Learnings and Next Steps

During this experience of Virtual Reality, I have learned a lot of techniques using Unity software. Using the skills I have gained, I would like to go in-depth with more projects in the future that send a valuable clear message to an audience.
